Gap up and gap down stocks

A gap happens when a stock opens well above or below its previous close. This guide explains the four gap types, the main strategies, and why gap trading is risky.

In short

  • A gap is a price range that never traded, usually caused by overnight news.
  • Classify the gap first: common, breakaway, continuation or exhaustion gaps call for different approaches.
  • Gap and go follows the gap; fading bets on a fill. Applying the wrong one to the wrong gap type is a common mistake.
  • Opening volatility is extreme, so risk less per trade than usual.

A gap against the previous close

The empty space between the previous close and the open is the gap. Entry and stop levels are measured against it.

Four types of price gaps

Classifying the gap before choosing a strategy removes much of the guesswork. Figures are rules of thumb.

  • CommonSmall, routine gaps from thin overnight trading, on normal or below-average volume. They tend to fill within days. The usual approach is to fade the gap.
  • BreakawayThe start of a new trend as price breaks out of consolidation on heavy volume, several times average. They fill least often. Follow the gap direction.
  • ContinuationAppear mid-trend on steady or rising volume and suggest momentum will persist. They usually do not fill until the trend is exhausted. Stay with the trend.
  • ExhaustionA final parabolic spike on climactic volume near the end of a trend. They often fill. Fade only cautiously and after confirmation.

Four common gap strategies

Each fits a different gap type and set of conditions.

StrategyWhen to useExecution
Gap and goA large gap with a clear positive catalyst, heavy pre-market volume and consolidation near the pre-market high. Buy a gap up, or short a gap down, at or shortly after the open.Enter on a break of the pre-market high, stop just below pre-market support, and exit on a target or a time stop.
Fade the gapA moderate gap with no strong catalyst, limited pre-market volume and a direction against the prevailing trend. Bet on a return toward the previous close.Wait for signs of momentum exhaustion, stop beyond the pre-market extreme, exit near the previous close.
Opening range breakoutAfter the initial volatility settles, or when the gap direction is unclear. Define the first 15 to 30 minutes as the opening range and trade a breakout from it.Enter on a breakout with rising volume, stop just inside the range, trail or target a multiple of the range width.
Gap fill tradingSmall to medium gaps with no strong catalyst and a clear technical level at the fill zone. Explicitly target the unfilled space.Enter after exhaustion signs, stop beyond the gap extreme, scale out at a half fill and a full fill.

Best stocks for gap trading

Not all stocks gap predictably. Focus on stocks with the right liquidity, price and volatility, and verify current data yourself.

Liquidity

Healthy average daily volume and, on the day, pre-market volume well above normal, so spreads are tight and exits are clean.

Price range

Mid-priced stocks usually give meaningful dollar gaps while keeping position sizing practical. Avoid very low-priced stocks.

Volatility

Beta above the market and a reasonable average true range. Too little means no opportunity, too much means unmanageable risk.

Sectors and catalysts

Technology, biotech, consumer discretionary and other growth sectors with regular catalysts such as earnings and regulatory dates gap more often than utilities or staples.

Build a watchlist

Keep a short list of stocks that meet the criteria and review how each has historically behaved after gaps. Some fill quickly, others tend to hold.

Risk management: protect your capital

Most retail gap traders lose money. The difference is risk control and avoiding common mistakes.

Conservative sizing

Gap trades are volatile and slippage is common at the open, so risk less per trade than usual and limit total gap exposure.

Time-based stops

Gap trades show their hand quickly. If a position has not progressed within the first hour or so, many traders exit rather than hold.

Strict stop-losses

A gap that fails to behave often extends further. Honour stops and never average down.

Volume confirmation

Gaps without institutional volume tend to fill more often. Check pre-market volume against the average before trading.

Gap trading mistakes to avoid

  • Entering too early. Chaotic opening volatility runs over early entries; many traders wait 15 to 30 minutes for direction.
  • Using the wrong strategy for the gap type. Fading breakaway gaps or following exhaustion gaps produces consistent losses.

Is gap trading right for you?

It may suit you if

  • You are available around the pre-market and the first hour or two after the open.
  • You have real trading experience and strong pattern recognition.
  • You have pre-market access at your broker and enough capital that conservative position sizes remain meaningful.
  • You are comfortable with modest win rates and frequent small losses, and focus on reward relative to risk.

It is a poor fit if

  • You are a beginner. Master basic day and swing trading first.
  • You are a part-time trader who cannot watch the morning, a conservative investor, or you have a small account.

Gap trading questions

What are gap up and gap down in stocks?

A gap up is when a stock opens above the previous close, leaving a price range that never traded. A gap down is when it opens below. They are usually caused by overnight news such as earnings, analyst actions or market events.

How often do gaps fill?

Many gaps eventually fill, but timing varies and there is no guarantee. Small common gaps tend to fill within days, while large gaps can take weeks or months or never fill. Breakaway gaps fill least often and exhaustion gaps fill most often.

What is the best strategy for trading gaps?

It depends on the gap. Small gaps without catalysts are commonly faded. Large gaps with a strong catalyst and volume are commonly followed with gap-and-go, which tends to win less often but with larger winners. Opening range breakout blends both.

How do you scan for gap stocks?

Scan pre-market with a scanner or broker platform for a minimum gap size, healthy pre-market volume, a sensible price range and good average volume. Then check the news for the catalyst and compare pre-market volume with normal.

Can you make money trading gaps?

Some people do, but most retail gap traders lose money because of poor strategy selection, timing and risk control. Gap fading tends to win more often with smaller gains, while gap-and-go wins less often with larger gains.

What causes stocks to gap?

Overnight events that change supply and demand: earnings, analyst upgrades or downgrades, regulatory decisions, acquisitions, guidance changes, sector news and broad market moves.

Should you buy stocks that gap up?

Only under specific conditions: a large gap with a strong catalyst, heavy pre-market volume, a continuation setup and continued buying in the first minutes after the open. Avoid gaps with no catalyst or fading volume.

What size is a significant gap?

It depends on the stock volatility. Compare the gap with the stock average true range: a gap that is large relative to normal daily movement matters more than the raw percentage.

How long do gap fills take?

It varies widely. Small gaps often fill within days, larger ones can take weeks or months, and some never fill. Gap type matters more than size.

What is gap and go?

Buying a stock gapping up, or shorting one gapping down, at or soon after the open to ride momentum in the gap direction. It works best with a large gap, a clear catalyst and heavy pre-market volume.

Do gap downs usually recover?

They often fill eventually, but timing varies and it is not guaranteed. Gap downs from temporary concerns recover faster than those from fundamental deterioration.

Should you hold gap trades overnight?

Generally not. The edge, if any, is in the first hour or two after the open, and holding overnight adds new gap risk and ties up capital.

What are the risks of gap trading?

Extreme opening volatility, slippage on fills, false breakouts, modest win rates, overtrading because gaps occur daily, and overnight gap risk if you hold.

How much money do you need?

It depends on your risk rules. Frequent day trades in a US margin account require 25,000 dollars under the pattern day trader rule. With small accounts, conservative sizing leaves positions too small to matter after costs.

Should beginners start with gap trading?

No. It combines pre-market analysis, fast decisions at the open, catalyst evaluation and emotional control. Start with swing trading and build experience first.

Gap trading is fast and risky

Opening volatility can move a position several percent in minutes, fills can be worse than expected, and many gaps never fill. Most retail gap traders lose money. InterNative does not track results for gap plays and does not publish a dedicated gap service. This is education, not advice.
