Unusual options activity
Learn how traders spot abnormal volume and large premium orders, and why such activity does not reliably predict price moves.
Typical signs
- Volume above average
- Volume above open interest
- Large premium, one strike
- Buying at the ask
In short
- Activity is called unusual when volume is far above average or above open interest.
- Volume above open interest suggests new positions are being opened.
- The data does not reveal intent; hedges and spreads look similar.
- Use it as context with a defined stop-loss, never as a trigger.
What is unusual options activity (UOA)?
Unusual options activity is trading in a contract that is far above its normal level.
It is usually defined as volume well above the contract's daily average, or volume above its open interest. Some traders use a rule of thumb of several times the average.
The activity may mean someone is positioning ahead of a move or a catalyst, but it can equally be a hedge or part of a multi-leg trade. The data does not reveal intent.

Unusual options activity questions
What makes options activity unusual?
Activity is generally considered unusual when a contract's volume far exceeds its typical daily average, or exceeds its current open interest. That can suggest new positions are being opened rather than existing ones traded.
Does unusual volume always mean a big move is coming?
No. Unusual volume can be part of a hedge or a spread. Combined with aggressive buying and large premium it may add context, but it never gives certainty.
Is volume higher than open interest important?
It is one of the commonly watched UOA signs. When volume exceeds open interest, new positions are very likely being opened, which can show fresh interest from market participants.
How do I filter out the noise in UOA?
Traders commonly filter for large-premium trades, trades executed at the ask, and repeat activity where the same contract is hit several times in a session. This removes many small trades, but it cannot tell hedges from speculation.
